It's a genuinely complex question — and the honest answer is that there's no universal formula. The right number depends on your event type, venue configuration, expected attendance, alcohol service, and your specific risk profile.

The Industry Starting Point: Security Ratios

Most security planners start with a staff-to-patron ratio. Common ratios used in Australia:

  • General events (low risk): 1 security officer per 100–150 attendees
  • Events with alcohol: 1 per 75–100 attendees
  • High-energy events (concerts, festivals): 1 per 50–75 attendees
  • High-risk events (nightclub-style, late night): 1 per 25–50 attendees

These ratios are starting points, not gospel. They need to be adjusted based on the factors below.

Factors That Increase Your Security Requirement

Alcohol Service

The single biggest driver of security requirements is alcohol. Events with open bars, unlimited drinks packages, or long event durations with continuous alcohol service require significantly higher security ratios than dry events. Venue Configuration

Multiple entry points, poor sightlines, dark areas, or complex multi-level venues all increase your security requirement. A simple outdoor event with one entry point needs fewer officers than a multi-stage festival with 20+ access gates and numerous shadowed areas.

Crowd Demographics and Type

An 18–25 crowd at a late-night event presents different security risks than a family audience at a community festival. Your security provider needs to understand who is coming to your event to plan appropriately.

Event Duration

Longer events — particularly those crossing into late-night hours — require shift changes, which affects staffing totals. A 12-hour festival requires approximately twice the total officers of a 6-hour event if officers work 6-hour shifts.

Historical Incidents

Role-Based Staffing — Beyond the Ratio
